What exactly is Morse code?

Morse code encodes text as sequences of two symbols — dots and dashes. Each letter, digit, and some punctuation maps to a unique pattern. This tool uses International Morse code, the modern worldwide standard.

How are letters and words separated?

When encoding, letters are separated by a single space and words are separated by /. When decoding, a / becomes a space and any whitespace separates letters.

Why do I see · and instead of . and -?

The encoder outputs the typographic middle dot · and minus sign for readability. The decoder accepts both styles, so . or · and - or all work.

What happens to characters it doesn't recognize?

Unsupported characters (such as emoji or symbols outside the chart) pass through unchanged rather than being dropped, so you can spot anything that didn't translate.

Is it case-sensitive?

No. Input is uppercased before encoding, so sos, SOS, and SoS all produce the same dots and dashes.

Is Morse code a form of encryption?

No. Morse is fully reversible and offers no secrecy — anyone with the chart can decode it. It's a different representation of text, not a way to hide data.

Does any of my data leave my browser?

Never. All conversion happens locally in JavaScript. Your input is not sent to, stored on, or logged by any server.
